The Source of Inspiration

‘Artemis’ is a continuation of a theme of research about a sense of place and our relationship with the land. I have a lifelong interest in archaeology and the natural environment. This piece follows on from the ‘Eshaness’ vessel, begun during a residency at the South House Silver Workshop in Shetland. Cornwall and Shetland have bear similarities in landscape despite being at opposite ends of the land, and both are places of significance within a historical context.

‘Artemis’ illustrates the windswept landscape, the harsh winds that shape the peninsula and the plants that grow there. The vessel shape is designed to evoke the full moon above the land.

The Production Method

The vessel was hand raised and planished using a variety of stakes and hammers. The shape is then filled with a pitch substance and deep relief chased to alter the form and create the swirling plant form, evoking a vortex, and texture is added using different punches and hammers.

Hallmarked Britannia silver, 2015.
