The ‘Hollow Way’ silver vessel is made by hammer forming the initial shape from flat sheet silver using hammering techniques that have been in use for millennia. Once the vessel shape is complete the it is filled with a pitch substance and the pattern is applied to the surface using various punches to ‘draw’ on the metal.

.

The design of the ‘Hollow Way’ vessel was first inspired, one windswept autumnal day, when coming across a curiously shaped and textured piece of bark. This was the starting point for the design that then continued to swirl around the vessel. The name ‘Hollow Way’ is a sunken lane (also holloway) is a road which has over time fallen significantly lower than the land on either side. These are places steeped in the history and folklore of the land, and often feel like a portal.

“These are the paths that are carved deep into the land by the footsteps of countless people and beasts, and are often so canopied by trees that they resemble tunnels bored out of the woodland… the derivation of its name is uncertain, another theory is that the name comes from ‘hallow’, denoting significance as a pilgrimage route…. It’s hardly possible to walk a holloway without a sense of the travellers and journeys of the past: the are passages of time.”
